When Governor Christie vetoed an online gaming bill in 2011, one of his concerns was that ?internet cafes? would spring up, advertising for customers to visit their locations and join others in gambling online.
Christie saw that as effectively allowing for businesses to profit from online gambling, in spite of the fact that only Atlantic City is allowed to have casinos.
Well, a man from Wayne in Passaic County pleaded guilty Thursday in a case reminiscent of this angle ? in spite of the fact that Christie hasn?t even made online gaming legal yet:
Chester Ward, 40, pled guilty to two counts of maintaining a gambling resort in Morris County ? one in Pompton Plains and one in Parsippany.
The Morris County Prosecutor?s Office tells us that Ward acknowledged only the two ?Connections Internet Cafe? businesses ? hey, there?s that phrase that Christie had mentioned.
from the story:
?The release states that in his businesses, Ward accepted money from third parties with the understanding that the third parties would be participating in gambling activities. Specifically, members of the public would place bets on games of chance. Ward owned both businesses from November 2011 through July 2012.
As part of the plea agreement to the 4th degree charge, Ward will be placed on probation, serve 200 hours of community service and pay a $2,000 fine. Separately, in a related consent judgment, Ward agreed to forfeit monies related to the illegal activities in bank accounts and seized currencies totaling $89,062.56.?
Meanwhile, the new version of the online gaming bill that Christie must decide on by Thursday takes steps to prevent businesses from advertising for online gaming customers. We?ll see if that ? and other changes ? will mollify Christie.
