New Zealand?s fast bowler Kyle Mills believes the new ODI fielding restrictions could be the biggest test for the bowlers in the forthcoming One Day International series against between New Zealand and England, to be played at the former?s backyard.
As per the new ICC rules, that have been effective since October last year, only four fielders can be placed outside the 30-yards circle even in the non-powerplay overs. Mills said that these field restrictions will make things particularly difficult for the bowling side at the compact grounds in New Zealand.
"That [four fielders outside the circle] is pretty hard to bowl to," Mills told the?New Zealand Herald on Saturday. "And I imagine even more so on New Zealand grounds. Having only four out at Eden Park [Auckland], Hamilton and even Napier is going to be a real test of bowlers' skills. It's going to be a huge challenge for all the bowlers in the series," the 33-year-old Auckland pacer went on to add.
New Zealand lost the T20 leg of the itinerary 2-1, but Mills said that the T20 series loss will not affect their performance going into the three-match ODI series. The right-arm medium pacer cited the Kiwis? rare ODI series win in South Africa last month, which was followed by a crushing in Tests, as evidence that previous results do not have a bearing on the team?s mindset.
"I guess we didn't have the battle scars from what happened in the Tests. The nature of international cricket now is, when you're chopping from series to series, and different formats, you can often put things that happened previously to bed quite quickly," said Mills, who has so far played 144 One Day Internationals, picking up 212 wickets at an average of 26.03.
New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum also said he expected his side to recover quickly from the T20 series loss.
"We expected to win the T20 series coming in to it. So to lose it, we are obviously disappointed about that," he said. "But I thought we bounced back straightaway in the?second T20?[after losing the first] and I expect us to bounce back strongly in the first game of the one-dayers too," added McCullum.
