Clever battery completes stretchable electronics package

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Northwestern University's Yonggang Huang and the University of Illinois' John A. Rogers are the first to demonstrate a stretchable lithium-ion battery -- a flexible device capable of powering their innovative stretchable electronics.

No longer needing to be connected by a cord to an electrical outlet, the stretchable electronic devices now could be used anywhere, including inside the human body. The implantable electronics could monitor anything from brain waves to heart activity, succeeding where flat, rigid batteries would fail.

Huang and Rogers have demonstrated a battery that continues to work -- powering a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) -- even when stretched, folded, twisted and mounted on a human elbow. The battery can work for eight to nine hours before it needs recharging, which can be done wirelessly.

The new battery enables true integration of electronics and power into a small, stretchable package. Details will be published Feb. 26 by the online journal Nature Communications.

"We start with a lot of battery components side by side in a very small space, and we connect them with tightly packed, long wavy lines," said Huang, a corresponding author of the paper. "These wires provide the flexibility. When we stretch the battery, the wavy interconnecting lines unfurl, much like yarn unspooling. And we can stretch the device a great deal and still have a working battery."

Huang led the portion of the research focused on theory, design and modeling. He is the Joseph Cummings Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The power and voltage of the stretchable battery are similar to a conventional lithium-ion battery of the same size, but the flexible battery can stretch up to 300 percent of its original size and still function.

Rogers, also a corresponding author of the paper, led the group that worked on the experimental and fabrication work of the stretchable battery. He is the Swanlund Chair at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Huang and Rogers have been working together for the last six years on stretchable electronics, and designing a cordless power supply has been a major challenge. Now they have solved the problem with their clever "space filling technique," which delivers a small, high-powered battery.

For their stretchable electronic circuits, the two developed "pop-up" technology that allows circuits to bend, stretch and twist. They created an array of tiny circuit elements connected by metal wire "pop-up bridges." When the array is stretched, the wires -- not the rigid circuits -- pop up.

This approach works for circuits but not for a stretchable battery. A lot of space is needed in between components for the "pop-up" interconnect to work. Circuits can be spaced out enough in an array, but battery components must be packed tightly to produce a powerful but small battery. There is not enough space between battery components for the "pop-up" technology to work.

Huang's design solution is to use metal wire interconnects that are long, wavy lines, filling the small space between battery components. (The power travels through the interconnects.)

The unique mechanism is a "spring within a spring": The line connecting the components is a large "S" shape and within that "S" are many smaller "S's." When the battery is stretched, the large "S" first stretches out and disappears, leaving a line of small squiggles. The stretching continues, with the small squiggles disappearing as the interconnect between electrodes becomes taut.

"We call this ordered unraveling," Huang said. "And this is how we can produce a battery that stretches up to 300 percent of its original size."

The stretching process is reversible, and the battery can be recharged wirelessly. The battery's design allows for the integration of stretchable, inductive coils to enable charging through an external source but without the need for a physical connection.

Huang, Rogers and their teams found the battery capable of 20 cycles of recharging with little loss in capacity. The system they report in the paper consists of a square array of 100 electrode disks, electrically connected in parallel.

BlogHer Food Interviews: Scale Your Small Business | BlogHer

This week's BlogHer Food '13 speaker interview features two of the panelists from the Scale Your Small Business session. What's that all about? It's about growing your blog beyond a website and treating it like the blossoming business it has become. I asked our speakers this question to help you out:

If you could offer just ONE piece of advice to those looking at re-framing their blog as a business, what would it be?

Kristin Guy shares an important tip (or two) before you press send on an email to that big brand.

Don?t stress over Ad networks as a source of primary income. Sponsored content is king! Search out brands that you want to work with, learn how to navigate social media outlets and make direct connections. Most people go the route of researching and requesting introductions in a more formal manner through sites such as Linkedin or a brand?s corporate contact page with hopes of gaining inside access for project pitches. The people you really need to get the attention of are those manning the brand?s Twitter and Facebook feeds. By contacting these accounts directly you?ll avoid getting lost in someone?s inbox and communicate directly with the department you want to partner with. Once you make that introduction and they express interest in partnership, make sure your pitch is clear, concise and attached with related rate sheets & media kit. Delivering a complete package first cuts down on unnecessary emails and time, in turn creating a professional relationship they will be more willing to with.

You can connect with Kristin via Twitter and Facebook.

Ruth Harding reminds you that you can delegate!

You don't need to do it all. Seven words that can make all the difference to someone who is trying to turn a blog into a full-time business. Because, let's be frank, many of you are trying really hard grow your blog singlehandedly...while you simultaneously juggle many other tasks: parenting, housekeeping, a job, volunteer work...the list could go on and on.

The good news is that there isn't a Blogger Regulation Committee that is watching to make sure the definition of ?self-publishing? is literally adhered to. Martha Stewart created a concept and hired a creative team to help turn that concept into an internationally recognized brand. You can do the same thing, on a smaller scale. Turning over a few blogging tasks that are less fulfilling to you can open up doors of opportunity?simply because doing so gives you time to focus on what matters to you. Whether you use that time to build sponsor relationships, come up with new content, or to take back your weekends isn't important. The important thing is that when you don't try to do it all yourself, you have more time to make what you can do better.

You can find Ruth on Twitter, Windmill Words and A House in Holland.

Also presenting during this panel will be Kristen Herwitz and Rachelle King.

World powers and Iran end talks, sides to meet again

ALMATY (Reuters) - World powers ended two days of talks with Iran on Wednesday with no sign of a breakthrough, and the two sides have agreed to meet at expert level in Istanbul next month and to hold further high-level negotiations in Kazakhstan in April.

At the talks that ended in the Kazakh city of Almaty, the six world powers - France, Germany, the United States, China Russia and Britain - offered to lift some sanctions if Iran scaled back nuclear activity the West fears could be used to build bombs. Tehran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Hopes of a significant easing of the deadlock in the decade-old dispute were dented when Russian media cited a source close to the talks as saying there had been no clear progress.

"So far there is no particular rapprochement. There is an impression that the atmosphere is not very good," Interfax news agency quoted the source as saying shortly before the talks ended.

Iran said the expert-level talks between the two sides would be held in Istanbul on March 18 and another round of political negotiations in Almaty on April 5-6.

Russia's negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, said the Istanbul meeting would take place on March 17-18 and gave the same dates as Iran of April 5-6 for the Almaty talks.

The meeting in Almaty that ended on Wednesday was the first between the world powers and Iran in eight months. Western officials described the first day of the talks as "useful". Iranian state television described the atmosphere in the discussions as "very serious".

The outcome will be closely watched in Israel, which has strongly hinted that it could attack Iran's nuclear sites if diplomacy and sanctions fail to stop Tehran's uranium enrichment program.

Iran says Israel's assumed nuclear arsenal is the main threat to peace and denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make atomic bombs. It says it is only aiming to produce nuclear energy so that it can export more oil.

In their latest attempt to break years of stalemate in the dispute, the powers are offering Iran a relaxation of some of the sanctions that are taking a heavy toll on its economy.

Western officials have confirmed the offer includes some limited sanctions easing if Iran closes a underground site where it carries out its most controversial uranium enrichment work.

Diplomats had seen scant chances of a conclusive deal with Iran before a June presidential election - with the political elite preoccupied with domestic issues - but they had hoped to hold follow-up talks soon.

Prince William rescues stranded hikers at night via helicopter

Adrian Dennis / AFP / Getty Images file

Prince William is pictured during his training at airbase RAF Cranwell in January 2008.

By Alexis L. Loinaz, Eonline

He may not have come riding in on a white horse, but this prince still came to the rescue, albeit on a different steed altogether.

On Tuesday, Prince William swooped in to help save a pair of hikers via helicopter after the two were reported missing earlier this week while trekking the mountainous north Wales region of Snowdonia.

Per British media reports, the unidentified hikers, who were in their 40s and 50s, made their way to the area's Glyder range but were forced to camp out there on Monday ??where freezing temperatures could prove life-threatening ??after lacking the necessary gear to get them off the mountain before nightfall.

Prince William saves schoolgirls in helicopter sea rescue

The two had promised to phone a friend with an update during their trip, but when the call never came, authorities were alerted and a search party was dispatched.

The pair were eventually found by a mountain rescue team aided by rescue dogs, and William and his helicopter crew arrived to take them to safety.

Consider it yet another heroic feather in the royal's increasingly be-feathered cap: Duchess Kate's hubby, who is a trained pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force, has been putting those chopper skills to essential use. Over the last six months, he's participated no fewer than four rescue missions, including saving shipwrecked Russians in the Irish Sea and schoolgirls stranded off the Welsh coast.

Looks like this is one prince whose duties to his people transcend mere ceremonial pomp and pageantry.?

S. Korea holds breath for '2nd miracle on the Han River' : Voice of ...

President Park seems to be promising for every group of her electorate and even sending messages across the border, across the demilitarized zone and further, across the Pacific and to the nearest neighbors. First of all, president Park wants to make Korea democratic and economically stable and a happy society, and how she can achieve it is another issue but it looks like she is guide to deliver the opening of the new era of hope ? this is how she entitled her inaugural speech today. So, I think that President Park is trying to address most of the issues - both economic, political and security issues looking at the core of the problems. So, she tries to make South Korean society still very economically viable and export oriented. She tries to achieve some sort of reconciliation between North and South Korea or at least avoid any open clashes and she sends clear message to the neighbors that Korea is going to look at the possibilities of maintaining its highly developed level of its industry. She will put more emphasis on her science and technology in order to achieve the creativity of the economy. So, her inaugural speech was full of promises, she will have 5 years to prove that she understands the ways how to achieve these goals and I think she is well-placed in politics and she is well-versed and well-trained politician. All she needs is the support of the people and I think that the very fact that she was successful in the presidential elections, that the majority of the Koreans supported her gives some hope that promises she have are going to be delivered and people are going to support the ways how she is going to lead the nation to the great achievements of economic democratization, and as she said, the second miracle of the Han River.

When you were saying that she has the popular support, as far as I understand only a little bit more than 50% voted for her. So, doesn?t it really indicate that a good portion of South Koreans is somewhat skeptical about her promises?

Well, a little more than 50% is an excellent mark for a democratic society. If you look at the United States, if you look at European countries, you will see there is hardly a possibility for any politician to win more than, say 55%. It would be landslide victory if somebody gets 55%. Usually it is less, so it is often just a very narrow competition. And president Park was competing against the democratic camp and it is interesting that she belongs to and she represents the conservative wing of the politics in South Korea and still despite of the rather controversial image of her father late president Park Chung-hee, despite of the rather difficult situation, which was bequeathed from her predecessor president Lee Myung-bak, the conservative who derailed the inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation, still she was supported by more than 50% of the population. Certainly Korea is divided, there is so-called south south division controversy between left and right in Korean politics, it is not new phenomena, it is quite a bit of time since Korea was divided. This division in Korean politics shows that the society is groping for ways to find the reconciliation, first, of all with North Korea which is quite difficult but, secondly, inside the society. And this division between left and political left and political right is what we saw during the electorate election campaign and Park Geun-hye was very skilled and very accurate by appealing to both groups and finally she managed to secure victory and smash it from Moon Jae-in, from her rival from the democratic camp by showing better political qualification, some clearer program, and definitely the will to deliver her promises by the means, which would not antagonize the society, and that is what South Korea badly needs - the reconciliation within the society, which would sooner or later lead to the reunification or at least reconciliation with North Korea and peaceful co-existence with the neighbors.

But given the new US policies in that region, how do you think the foreign politics and the relations between South Korea and the United States might develop under the new president?

Certainly, since president Park belongs to the conservative camp, the relations between Seoul and Washington are going to be stable, friendly, these will be the relations of security allies. We know that inter-Korean cooperation often damages the relations between South Korea and the United States, we saw it during the 10 Years of Sunshine Policy of 1998-2007. But I don?t expect now since president Park won the election, I don?t expect the continuation or repetition or resumption of the Sunshine Policy, but at least the relations with Washington are going to be stable. That is what South Korea actually sets as its goal that either divided or unified the Republic of Korea is going to stay a security ally of the United States. Some people might find this statement difficult to absorb because we know that Korean Peninsula is divided and as long as some superpowers or regional powers try to dominate on the Korean Peninsula, any kind of expectation of peace or reconciliation looks rather problematic. So, US-South Korean alliance, which is understood in Seoul and Tokyo as linchpin of security instability is looked at with rather suspicion from Beijing and Moscow and definitely from Pyongyang. So, I believe that relations between South Korea and the United States are going to be stable, no sensations should be expected in the next 5 years of president Park as a president of Republic of Korea but it also means that reconciliation and cooperation between North and South Korea probably is not going to change its nature. So, there will be rather confrontation instead of peaceful co-existence, rivalry rather than reconciliation and possibly military conflicts, which we saw several times during the president Park?s predecessor Lee Myung-bak, we saw it several times in particular during 2010 - the aggravation and escalation of the situation, hostilities in West Sea and the situation in the Korean Peninsula. So, I believe that South Korea should look more at the possibility of peaceful co-existence with North Korea, without asking permission, specific permission from Washington DC or from any other regional power, only in that case the reconciliation and peaceful co-existence between north and south would be possible and potentially reunification or at least collaboration can be achieved but security alliances and Seoul-Washington-Tokyo security alliance precludes any cooperation with North Korea as a hostile state, as a state which still is at war with the United States, South Korea and Japan, and in that case I don?t expect any major changes in the next 5 years while president Park is in office.

Do you think that perhaps in this case South Korea might appear to be something like a hostage between the US and the Chinese Republic? I mean the growing rivalry between the two heavyweights seems to be sending a little bit alarming signals around the region. Do you think that South Korea could be involved?

Certainly many people compare the Korean Peninsula with a shrimp between the whales - when whales fight, the shrimp is suffering and the little peninsula is squeezed between the mammoth countries of China, Russia, the United States, and certainly the conflicting security blocks, something what we inherited from the cold war era, does not help the Korean unification. Certainly, the cold war frontier crosses the Korean Peninsula and the continuing suspicions and continuing threat, which we see in the region on one side from People?s Republic of China, on the other side, from the United States, certainly affects the Korean Peninsula and that is why we see the continuation and the division of Korea into North and South Democratic People?s Republic and Republic of Korea. Certainly, both can be looked as buffer states by the continuing cold war confrontation. But South Korea managed to develop the democratic mechanisms, which govern its politics and economy. Certainly the Republic of Korea tries to be friendly with at least one superpower but the problem is that the regional superpower, namely China is still a communist country which despite its economic reforms still misses a number of democratic institutions. So, South Korea demonstrates the stability and actually the pattern for many regional countries, of course for North Korea, but other regional countries probably should follow the pattern of Republic of Korea which managed to resurrect from the status of the poorest country in east Asia, a country which was governed by fierce dictatorship. By the way, the father of the current president Park was a dictator for a number of years before he was elected a president. So, we could see this miracle on the Han river and probably should understand that it is a beacon for freedom, democracy, egalitarity and economic prosperity for the regional powers including China. So, probably China should learn to some degree from Republic of Korea and that is actually what is happening at the moment. China is trying to antagonize with South Korea but economic operation is growing and also China is trying to see Korea as a regional balancer rather than a hostile power. So, as soon as Koreans in North and South Korea manage to iron out differences, I think that the region is going to be much more peaceful and much more stable corner of international community and the role of China and the United States on the Korean peninsula should be diminished, and I think the sooner it happens, the better would be for the Korean people.

Thank you so much.

Just to remind you, this time our guest speaker was Dr. Leonid Petrov, Expert on the Korean Peninsula at the Australian National University, coming to us from Sydney.

Trauma Can Up Risk of Mental Disorders in First Responders ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on February 27, 2013

Trauma Can Up Risk of Mental Disorders in First RespondersA new study suggests repeated exposure to traumatic events increase the risk of developing a psychiatric disorder among protective service workers, especially for those early in their careers.

Overall, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that protective services workers do not appear to have a higher prevalence of mental health problems than workers in other occupations.

The critical factor appears to be exposure to trauma, as only those with repeated contact to violence or suffering have an increased likelihood of developing psychiatric problems. A hardening effect also appears to occur as contact with trauma among well-experienced protective services worker is less harmful.

?Our findings suggest that exposure to diverse types of traumatic events among protective services workers is a risk factor for new onset of psychopathology and alcohol use disorders,? said Christopher N. Kaufmann, M.H.S., lead author of the study.

?When we examined the relationship of exposure to common traumas with the development of mood, anxiety and alcohol use disorders among protective services workers, we found that these workers were at greater risk for developing a mood or alcohol use disorder.

?Interestingly, this relationship was not seen in those who had been in these jobs for a longer period, but was strong and statistically significant in workers who recently joined the profession. Developing curricula in coping skills and providing timely interventions for early career protective services workers may help reduce future psychiatric morbidity in these workers.?

Using data from the U.S National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions researchers compared the prevalence of mental disorders of protective services workers to that of adults in other occupations.

In addition, they examined the association of exposure to common traumatic experiences with the development of new mood, anxiety and alcohol use disorders among protective services workers who recently joined the workforce and those who had been in these jobs for a longer period.

Lifetime and recent trauma events most commonly reported by protective services workers included: seeing someone badly injured or killed; unexpectedly seeing a dead body; having someone close die unexpectedly and having someone close experience a serious or life-threatening illness, accident or injury.

?The association between the number of different traumatic event types and incident mood and alcohol-use disorders, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder, was virtually confined to the group of early career protective services workers,? said Ramin Mojtabai, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., senior author of the study.

?Future research should examine the coping skills of protective services workers who have been in these jobs for many years, which might make them less likely to develop psychiatric complications in the face of various potentially traumatic experiences, ? said Mojtabai.

The authors note, ?Special support programs and services for these early career workers can potentially help to prevent development of chronic psychopathology and attrition from these critical jobs.?

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is arguing that looming government-wide spending cuts could idle military resources like naval aircraft carriers, while Republicans are criticizing the president for taking his arguments outside Washington instead of staying to work out a plan before Friday's deadline.

The president planned to appear Tuesday at Virginia's largest industrial employer, Newport News Shipbuilding, which would be affected by cuts to naval spending. Obama warned Monday that if the so-called sequester goes into effect later this week, the company's "workers will sit idle when they should be repairing ships, and a carrier sits idle when it should be deploying to the Persian Gulf."

Obama urged Congress to compromise to avoid the cuts, but there has been no indication the White House and congressional Republicans are actively negotiating a deal. The last known conversation between Obama and GOP leaders was last week, and there have been no in-person meetings between the parties this year.

Obama wants the replace the sequester with a package of targeted cuts and tax increases, while Republican leaders insist the savings should come from reduced spending alone.

Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, chair of the House Republican Conference, criticized Obama for traveling to southern Virginia rather than up the street to Capitol Hill to come up with a solution.

"We need the president to stop campaigning for higher taxes, come back here to Washington, D.C., and lead," McMorris Rodgers said during a press conference Monday with GOP leaders.

The sequester was designed as an unpalatable fallback, meant to take effect only if a congressional super-committee failed to come up with at least $1 trillion in savings from benefit programs.

The White House has warned the $85 billion in cuts could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms to meat inspections. The cuts would slash domestic and defense spending, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of workers.

The cuts also would impact Newport News Shipbuilding, which builds and maintains the nation's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers as well as other warships. The Navy has already delayed a long-planned overhaul of the USS Abraham Lincoln at the shipyard as a result of the budget uncertainty, and other plans call for delaying the construction of other ships.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., offered a potential way out of the stalemate Monday by indicating he was open to raising tax revenue if Obama offered to overhaul big-ticket entitlement programs. Many Republicans say they are done raising revenue after letting taxes on top earners increase in December.

"I'll raise revenue. Will you reform entitlements?" Graham said in a challenge to the president on CNN. "And both together, we'll set aside sequestration in a way that won't disrupt the economy and hurt the Defense Department."

Divine Ndhlukula, a Forbes 'Africa's Most Successful' Woman | The ...

The NextWomen Social Entrepreneurship?Theme.

Divine Ndhlukula is the founder and MD of DDNS Security Operations,?the holding company for SECURICO SECURITY SERVICES.?

She was named one of the most successful women in Africa by Forbes and recently deemed the 'Queen of the security industry in Zimbabwe' by BBC World. Her company is the largest employer of women ? currently ranking 900th in Zimbabwe outside of the civil service - having grown her business to over 3600 employees.?

Her astute leadership has turned SECURICO into one of the leading security organisations in Zimbabwe. This success in a male dominated industry saw her winning several leadership awards including the Empretec Entrepreneur of the Decade (2003), Zimbabwe Institute of Management Manager of the Year (2005), and Zimbabwe Institute of Directors' Director of the Year (2008).

Divine champions for women's economic and social empowerment and is a member of several voluntary organisations that seek to empower women. She?has?an honorary MBA from Women?s University in Africa in recognition of her accomplishments and work in gender equality initiatives in business.

?

TNW: How did you come up with the idea for Securico and then arrive at the decision to turn your idea into a reality?

DN: Firstly, I needed to create a decent livelihood for my family and myself. I always knew that I wanted to go into business from a very tender age and would tell my friends in high school that the business I was going to start was going to be significant in size.

Secondly, I had identified glaring gaps in the quality of service and professionalism in the private security sector and this inspired me to start a security company and make a difference.

Thirdly, I wanted to make a difference to disadvantaged women who could not get opportunities to get formal employment and I knew the security industry was a mass employer.

I became an activist for the empowerment of women when I was very young, at school. When I started working I joined women empowerment groups and I got to meet various role models who inspired me to seek personal self actualization.

TNW: What is the biggest challenge your business has faced in the last 15 years? What has been the biggest highlight?

DN: The biggest challenge that I faced was that I was a woman getting into a male dominated industry. The market had no confidence in woman as security practitioners and that was a barrier which we overcame through building a reputation for quality. The same lack of confidence extended to financial institutions which were reluctant to fund our operation so most of the growth had to be funded by reinvesting all proceeds into the company. We did not declare dividends until quite recently.

Secondly, the issue of corruption is a big challenge now especially from male operated companies who believe in going the short cut route to getting a foothold in the market.

Disappointingly corruption has become so rampant and we have indeed lost business to security companies that offer bribes. In some instances we had to fight really hard to retain our business and we were fortunate that top management in those companies quickly noticed the irregularities

TNW: You not only employee women in Executive and Board positions, but also in security roles. Do you feel that this gives your business an advantage over your competitors? If so, why?

DN: Firstly we have proved that women can do security work just as good as men and sometimes they are better. However at first it was extremely difficult to persuade both clients and my own team to accept women. Security was regarded as a masculine job but I managed to convince people that the key imperatives in security work is integrity, loyalty and brains. The employment of women actually saw losses going down significantly as women are generally more honest. Employment of women turned out to be the greatest competitive advantage during the height of the economic crisis in 2007 and 2008 when men were not interested in employment anymore due to the hyperinflation. Now we employ women whenever we can depending on the work we get.

TNW: Have you faced opposition from customers who would prefer male security guards? How do you deal with this?

DN: Indeed there was resistance by some clients who did not want to see female security guards at their sites. I had to make conscious and deliberate effort to persuade clients to accept women. I had to site the various reasons why deployment of women was important to manage some of the security risks they were facing. The few who initially accepted became the excellent references for other clients eventually. I ensured the deployed women operatives were thoroughly trained and inducted to the sites they were posted for them to be very effective. I was personally involved in this exercise to ensure its success.

TNW: Tell our community about the particular challenges faced in Zimbabwe by female entrepreneurs.

The Zimbabwean economy is actually driven by women at the micro level.?However the biggest challenge women entrepreneurs face is to break into big business and grow their enterprises.

Accessing loans is almost impossible because they do not have the security required by banks. Accessing markets is also a tall order as women generally find it difficult to go out and network at the various fora so increase their opportunities.

Cultural beliefs by society also militates against women entrepreneurs, as success is not usually associated with women. ?

Rather the stereotypical role is that a woman should become a good wife and mother, therefore many women simply strive to fulfill this role.?So at the end of the day it?s our society that mostly militates against the development of women entrepreneurs.

TNW: Do you feel optimistic about the future of entrepreneurialism in Africa in general?

DN: Absolutely, as Africa is the next frontier for investment in the global economy. In addition, there is a great move towards wealth creation by many seeing the opportunities being presented in our economies. With the shift towards political democratic changes in many countries now, this is also creating a serious entrepreneurial societies in Africa.

The positive thing in countries like Zimbabwe and others, entrepreneurial studies are now a must in the education systems so the new generation of entrepreneurs is developed.

There is also a change in mindset where parents and students alsike expected to get a good education and be employed by some multinational company.

TNW: Are there other female-founded Africa business which you really admire? Tell us a bit about them and why you respect them so much.

DN: In my travels and readings, I have seen quite some formidable African businesswomen that I admire. Locally we have people like Kubi Indi, Prof Hope Sadza, Lea Dauramanzi, Elizabeth Magaya, Barbara Rwodzi. Beyond our borders, I have met Joanne Mwangi of Kenya, Victoria of Uganda, Bethlehem Alemu of Ethiopia, Kofo Akinkugbe of Nigeria, the late Esther Ocloo of Ghana, Gloria Sorobe of South Africa etc.

What I admire about most of these women is that they have built their businesses from scratch, they are resilient and have had to overcome adverse conditions to be where they are.

TNW: Tell us about your work towards female empowerment in Zimbabwe.

DN: My greatest passion actually is women?s economic empowerment. Firstly, the creation of employment opportunities for the more than 900 women we employ. I also ensured that their unique needs as women are addressed all the time through the Gender Desk we have at SECURICO and the annual SECURICO Women Empowerment Seminars we have.

Secondly, I am involved with a number of women?s civic and business organisations where I avail myself for empowerment presentations especially on entrepreneurship. Through some of these and in my own personal initiatives, I mentor women aspiring or already running their businesses.

TNW: Do you have any role models or mentors?

DN: I have many role models both male and female. However, I am more inspired by women fore-bearers - those that made it before me as well as those doing well now despite the adversities they face.

TNW: Is there anything we haven?t asked you, but you would like to share with our community?

DN: Yes, I would like to encourage my fellow women out there to learn to stand for themselves, to stand for other women and above all to stand for justice and this world, in particular Africa, would be a better place.

Rocket explodes in Israel, first attack from Gaza since November truce

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A rocket fired from Gaza exploded in Israel on Tuesday, the first such attack since a November truce, and a militant group said it launched the strike to retaliate for the death of a Palestinian in an Israeli jail.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant group in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's West Bank-based Fatah movement, called the rocket a "first response" to inmate Arafat Jaradat's death in disputed circumstances on Saturday.

"We must resist our enemy by all available means," the group said in a statement emailed to reporters. "We stress our commitment to armed struggle against the Zionist enemy."

Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, said it was investigating the attack, which caused no casualties and followed a surge in West Bank protests since Jaradat's death and intermittent hunger strikes by four other prisoners.

The rocket hit a road near the southern city of Ashkelon, police said. Israel responded by closing the Kerem Shalom border crossing through which produce and other goods are moved into the Gaza Strip, but it took no immediate military action.

The rocket was the first to hit Israel since a November 21 truce brokered by Egypt that ended eight days of cross-border air strikes and missile attacks in which 175 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed.

In addition to the fire from Gaza, a surge of unrest in the occupied West Bank has raised fears in Israel of a new Palestinian Intifada, or uprising.

Abbas accused Israel of inciting the unrest but urged calm.

"We did not want things to go as far as they have. We do not want tension or any escalation," Abbas said in the West Bank, in his second appeal in as many days to tamp down the violence.

TORTURE ALLEGATIONS

On Monday, thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank turned out for the funeral of Jaradat, 30, who died a week after his arrest for throwing stones at Israeli vehicles.

Palestinian officials said he had died after being tortured in prison. But Israel said an autopsy carried out in the presence of a Palestinian coroner was inconclusive.

In confrontations after the emotive funeral, Israeli police shot and wounded five Palestinian youths in Bethlehem and outside a West Bank prison, leaving a 15-year-old boy with a critical head injury, Israeli and Palestinian medics said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman, commenting on the incident, said troops had opened fire at Palestinians who threw homemade hand grenades at a Jewish holy site called Rachel's Tomb.

Before the rocket attack from Gaza, media reports said Israeli officials had hoped the Palestinian protests were winding down.

Palestinian frustration has also been fuelled by Israel's expansion of Jewish settlements in territory captured in a 1967 war and deadlocked diplomacy for a peace agreement since 2010.

The U.S. State Department said American diplomats have contacted Israeli and Palestinian leaders to appeal for calm.

The United Nations coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Serry, called Tuesday's rocket fire "totally unacceptable" and urged an investigation into Jaradat's death.

Christians, Muslims pray to halt Israeli security wall

Families in a West Bank town call on divine intercession to stop the construction of a barrier they say will separate residents from their own land. NBC News' Yara Borgal reports.

By Yara Borgal, Producer, NBC News

BEIT JALA, West Bank ? A West Bank community plants olive trees, even though many residents don?t think they will ever see them harvested. Any day, construction of Israel?s security wall could slice through this valley.?

"We are trying in a way to keep this land ? especially for the children of Beit Jala to feel a little bit of freedom," said Maher Matar, a resident of the mostly Christian Palestinian community of 58 families.

Appeals to Israel?s courts have failed to stop the project, which Israel says is vital to protect it from terrorist attacks.

The impending decision has prompted both Christians and Muslims in the area to gather for weekly prayers they hope will stop Israel from building the separation wall.

While the International Criminal Court has said the wall is "illegal" under international law, Israel maintains the structure is essential.

"It is important to remember that before the waves of Palestinian terror took 1,000 Israeli lives, there was no need for a fence. There was no need for a security barrier," said Israeli Defense Ministry spokesman Josh Hantman. "This barrier, it saves lives. And every inch of the barrier is open to judicial review and up for appeal."

Israel has already completed 65 percent of the planned 435-mile barrier. Human rights organization B?Tselem says that if the wall is finished, 85 percent will fall on Palestinian land.

"People abroad they think we are terrorists," said Elaine, a Beit Jala resident who would give only her first name.?"We are not terrorists. We are fighting for our own rights. We are fighting for our own homes for our own land."

U.S. ex-basketball player Rodman bound for North Korea: AP

SEOUL (Reuters) - Retired U.S. basketball player Dennis Rodman is to visit North Korea to film a television documentary and will arrive in the capital Pyongyang on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

Rodman, now 51 years old, won five NBA championships in his prime, achieving a mix of fame and notoriety for his on- and off-court antics.

Thirty-year-old North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who has launched two long-range rockets and carried out a nuclear weapons test during his first year in power, is reported to be an avid NBA fan and had pictures taken with players from the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers during his school days in Switzerland.

Rodman, who sports trademark tattoos and piercings, played for the Chicago Bulls.

"At a time when tensions between the two countries (the United States and North Korea) are running high, it's important to keep lines of communication open, no matter how non-traditional those channels are," AP quoted Shane Smith, the founder of VICE, which is to make the TV series, as saying.

VICE, based in New York, is a production company that has previously filmed in North Korea. The report did not disclose the topic of the TV series but said it was part of "documentary-style news reports from around the world" that would be distributed on HBO in April.

United States citizens do not require clearance to visit North Korea, and Google Inc. Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt visited in January.

The United States is leading a drive in the United Nations to have stricter sanctions imposed on Pyongyang following its nuclear test two weeks ago.

The third Kim to rule North Korea, an isolated and impoverished state that has about 200,000 political prisoners in labor camps and where a third of children are malnourished, has a penchant for American culture.

On coming to office, he staged a spectacular featuring a host of Disney characters. He has also been pictured at theme parks, in sharp contrast with his father's austere appearances.

There have been a variety of attempts at sports diplomacy with North Korea, ranging from wrestling to judo and basketball.

None appears to have fared any better than the regular kind of diplomacy in preventing North Korea from pushing towards the acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Insert Coin semifinalist Snapzoom connects any scope to any smartphone

There are adapters out there that allow you to hook up your phone with a telescope or a pair of binoculars. Most of them, though, aren't universal. And we mean that on both sides of the equation -- they wont connect to all scopes or all phones. Snapzoom wants to be all things to those with a hankering for long distance photography, such as bird watchers or amateur astronomers. The solution is so simple that it actually stuns us that no one had thought of it before. That's not to say there isn't a lot of smart design involved, but ultimately the Snapzoom boils down to a set of adjustable clamps that provide an incredible amount of freedom. While image quality will rest largely on your choice of smartphone, there's no shortage of incredible shooters out there that you can slide into the mount.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S IV launch on March 14th in NYC

It was true. And then it wasn't. Now, here at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung has finally confirmed its rumored March 14th launch event for the much-anticipated Galaxy S IV. The smartphone giant's latest flagship is set to debut in New York City, apparently by popular demand. "We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year," Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin told Edaily news. "This time we changed the Venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from US mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country." As with any such announcement, details are sparse at best, so we'll need to wait a few more weeks before confirming specs and appearance for the Galaxy S III successor. But, as always, you're welcome to shout out your best guesses in the comments.
