ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.
Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.
"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."
The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.
The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.
Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.
Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.
But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.
"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."
If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.
"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

Cisco to buy privately held network software company
(Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc said it will buy privately held network traffic-management software maker Cariden Technologies Inc for about $141 million in cash.
Cariden will be integrated into Cisco's service provider networking group unit, Cisco said.
California-based Cariden supplies network planning, design and traffic management solutions for telecommunications service providers.
This is Cisco's third acquisition in November. Earlier this month Cisco said it will buy privately held cloud networking company Meraki for $1.2 billion in cash as part of its cloud and networking strategy.
Cisco shares were slightly up at $18.91 in trading before the bell on Thursday after closing at $18.83 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday.

'Egyptian Popeye' defends his 31-inch upper arms
MILFORD, Mass. (AP) ? Don't tell Popeye. It turns out you don't need to eat your spinach to get the world's biggest arms.
Massachusetts bodybuilder Moustafa Ismail eats seven pounds of protein, nine pounds of carbohydrates and three gallons of water each day to help maintain upper arms that measure 31 inches around ? as big as a small man's waist.
Skeptics say there must also be steroids or some other artificial means behind Ismail's beyond-bulging biceps and triceps, and Guinness World Records is waffling on whether to recognize him.
But he insists they are all-natural, the result of a punishing workout regimen he started after a guest at his uncle's wedding in his native Egypt mocked his overweight frame.
"They call me Popeye, the Egyptian Popeye," Ismail, 24, said while working out in the Boston suburb of Milford. But unlike the cartoon character, "I like chicken, beef, anything but spinach."
It's not easy having the world's biggest arms.
Generous amounts of poultry, seafood and shakes provide the protein he needs to fuel daily two-hour workouts in which he lifts as much as 600 pounds. He also takes mineral and vitamin supplements and drinks plenty of water to flush out his system.
Then there's clothes shopping. The rest of Ismail's body is average, so it's a challenge finding shirts that fit his arms without making him look like a little kid playing dress-up.
Not to mention the controversy that ensued when Guinness decided to recognize him as having the largest upper arm muscles on earth and critics accused him of using steroids or other artificial methods.
He lost a night of sleep but then decided the criticism "is motivation for me ? it's not something that's gonna put me down."
Ismail started building his muscles in his Egyptian hometown of Alexandria before moving to the United States in 2007 and settling in Franklin, southwest of Boston. To pay for his gym membership and dietary requirements, he worked two jobs as a gas station attendant, but gave up one after his wife complained that he was pushing himself too hard.
Then Guinness called last fall, offering him an all-expenses-paid trip to London for a signature appearance with the world's shortest woman and others.
He went, but then the controversy started. Strangers claimed online that he used steroids or had implants in his arms. Others speculated that he might have injected his muscles with a synthetic oil substance, synthol, used by bodybuilders to fluff muscle tissues.
"It is hurtful," Ismail said, noting that he has no scars that would have resulted from surgery and that supporting a wife in the U.S. and family members in Egypt doesn't leave him with spare cash to buy pricey synthetic oils.
He even went to Tokyo to appear in a Fuji TV documentary program in which independent doctors collected blood samples and X-rayed his muscles. They found nothing abnormal, he said.
Still, Guinness hastily removed references to Ismail from its website. Spokeswoman Sara Wilcox said in October that Guinness was conducting research with medical specialists and reviewing Ismail's category. She did not respond to emailed questions later seeking details about when Guinness would conclude the review and what it entails.
Some fellow amateur bodybuilders at his gym, however, support Ismail and say they believe his arms are natural.
"When I first saw him I thought 'Oh my God, he's a freak' ? the big Popeye arms, he's incredible, but he works out hard, so good luck to him," said Janice Vincuilla.
Ismail has lifted as much as 600 pounds but said he doesn't typically focus on how much weight he is hoisting.
"It's not about me lifting heavy weights," he said. "It's about me making the right techniques, even with the light weights, but getting good results out of that."

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A commission set up by the Pennsylvania Legislature after Jerry Sandusky's molestation arrest last year will issue a report that could recommend changes to state law.
The Pennsylvania Task Force on Child Protection Tuesday may also suggest new procedures to protect children.
The 11-person group was set up by the state House and Senate, with membership drawn from the legal profession, educators and health care workers.
The chairman, Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler, had hoped to have the report issued before the current legislative session ends so that lawmakers could take action, but the General Assembly is not expected to return until January.
Possible areas of focus include how child abuse is reported, the need to pass new laws or amend existing laws, and potential improvements in training.
Sandusky, 68, a former Penn State assistant football coach, is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison sentence after being convicted this summer of 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

He said the warrant instead begins the final chapter in the state?s five-year prosecution against sect?s indicted leaders and followers.
?This is simply the next step,? Strickland said.
Strickland said it was too early to speculate what the state would do with the property if given ownership.
It?s unknown how many families are still living at the ranch in Eldorado, located about 200 miles west of San Antonio.
Jeffs was convicted last year of sexually assaulting two of his underage brides. Prosecutors used DNA evidence to show he fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl prosecutors say he took as one of his spiritual wives. Jeffs is serving life in prison in Texas but has continued to try and continue to lead his church while serving his sentence.
Earlier this year, a new 100-foot concrete tower at a ranch was torn down by FLDS members.
In the four years since Texas authorities swarmed the ranch, state prosecutors have spent more than $4.5 million racking up swift convictions against him and 10 loyal followers on child sex and bigamy charges, according to state records.

The Sun announced Tuesday they were releasing Thibault from his contract after the team lost the Eastern Conference Finals to the eventual WNBA champions Indiana Fever this past season. Sienko acknowledged releasing Thibault may come as a shock to fans, considering the team had one of the best records in the league this past season (25-9) and star Tina Charles was named the 2012 WNBA Most Valuable Player.
"Change is difficult," Sienko said. "But ultimately, (our fans) understand what we're after which is an opportunity to win a championship and at least have a better opportunity that we did in the past."
The Sun were a favorite to win the Eastern Conference this past season but lost the decisive third game of the Eastern Conference Finals by 16 points on their home court. Sienko called that result "embarassing."
"It was very difficult to watch that last game," Sienko said. "Even as just a fan. I sat there the whole time wishing it didn't happen, but it did."
Sienko emphasized the decision to release Thibault was not a hostile one and he praised the coach for what he's done for the organization.
"Mike has put us in a great position," Sienko said. "There is nothing negative to say about Mike, I need to be very clear about that...He's done good, but at a certain point, after 10 years you need a new voice and a new direction."
The news even caught many of Connecticut's players off guard as several of them -- like Tina Charles and Kara Lawson -- turned to Twitter on Tuesday to express that they were surprised that Thibault was released.
Sun CEO Mitchell Etess said the decision to release Thibault came from team executives, not the roster.
"The players didn't call for this," Sun CEO Mitchell Etess said. "This is a business decision we're making in an effort to do what we think we need to do to get a championship for the Connecticut Sun."
Since making the announcement Tuesday morning, Sienko and Etess said the team has already been fielding calls from interested candidates for the head coaching position. The team hopes to name Thibault's replacement within the next month and no later than when the WNBA Free Agency period begins in February.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You may have received CPR training some time ago, but would you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? A new UCLA psychology study shows that people often do not recall things they have seen -- or at least walked by -- hundreds of times.
For the study, 54 people who work in the same building were asked if they knew the location of the fire extinguisher nearest their office. While many of the participants had worked in their offices for years and had passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 13 out of the 54 -- 24 percent -- knew the location.
When asked to find a fire extinguisher, however, everyone was able to do so within a few seconds; most were surprised they had never noticed them. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women, or between older and younger adults.
"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "If I asked you to draw the front of a dime or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that? You might get some elements right. Do you know who the president is? On the dime, is he facing left or right? Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."
Castel said that not noticing things isn't necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. "It might be a good thing not to burden your memory with information that is not relevant to you," he said.
But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are or what to do in an emergency, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.
"When you're on an airplane, do you know where the life vest is and what to do in the event of an emergency?" Castel asked. "You've been told many times, but how would you respond under stressful conditions, when there could be smoke and people screaming?"
A few months after being asked the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, the study participants were asked again if they knew where the closest one was. All of them knew.
"We don't notice something if we're attending to something else," Castel said. "Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we're almost blind to them until they become relevant."
What does this tell us about the importance of training, whether for emergencies or something as common as learning a new computer program?
Castel stresses that making errors during training is useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors -- or simple oversights -- can teach us that we don't know something well and need to pay more attention in order to remember it.
"It's good if errors happen during training and not during an event where you need the information," he said. "That's part of the learning process."
The study is published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.
Castel's co-authors are Michael Vendetti, a UCLA psychology graduate student, and Keith Holyoak, a UCLA professor of psychology. The study's participants work in UCLA's psychology building.

From the Editor's Desk: Doing a good thing badly
There's a reason why I tend to post stories on Google+ about the traditional journalism industry. For one, it's where I came from. There are days I miss it. But there are so many more days that I don't. Another reason is that what we do here is rooted in it. Not just us, but every tech blog, regardless of its background.
But really, for me, this job is fun. And we try to keep it that way. Make no mistake, we're writing about phones here. Hardly life-and-death stuff. But it's still important, and it's still challenging. Deciding what to write. Editing it into a cohesive story. Coming up with compelling illustrations. And that final moment where you hit the publish button and suddenly think "Oh, shit. What if I screwed something up?" It happens every time, no matter the story or review, no matter how much work we put into it. That feeling doesn't go away.
And you know what? We don't always get it right.

More Ways the New Health Insurance Rules Help You - Insurance ...

The Department of Health and Human Services recently revealed details about new laws for health insurers. In a previous blog, pointed out how those laws help you and your family. In this blog, I go over more new rules, and how those are going to help your family with health insurance.
The new rules make it clear that health insurance plans must cover items and services in a minimum of 10 categories that were defined by the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Each category is defined as "essential health benefits".
Those categories include: ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services (including behavioral health treatment), prescription drugs, rehabilitative and rehabilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventative and wellness services and chronic disease management, and pediatric services, (including oral and vision care).
Those are the types of things that a typical employer health plan would cover. Soon, all health insurance plans must include that type of coverage. This means your family can buy health insurance that is not connected to your place of employment, and still get those essential benefits covered.
Another change stops insurers from increasing a person's premium by a lot of money when a person reaches a certain age. The new rules say that premium rates cannot vary by age for individuals who are under the age of 21.
Right now, when a person hits a certain age, (the age that moves them from one "age band" to another), insurance companies raise the cost of the person's premium. That can make it too expensive for a person to keep their insurance.
To prevent this, insurers will have to spread out that cost. Insurers can charge slightly more each time a person has a birthday, (but not nearly as much as they would have otherwise charged). That stops when a person hits age 63. Everyone over 63 will pay the same rate (no matter how many more birthdays the person has). This will make things more affordable.
The proposed rules say that insurance companies can charge people who use tobacco 50% more than the customers who do not use tobacco. This is not good news for people who smoke. However, there is an option that can help with the extra cost. Insurers can offer an exemption of that higher cost to people who try to quit smoking.
The new laws also give employers permission to provide discounts on health insurance to workers who achieve certain medical or fitness goals. Those goals can include losing weight (or maintaining a specific weight), lowering their cholesterol level, or lowering their blood pressure.
This is good for people who get their insurance through their job. Some healthy choices can make your premiums be less expensive. You have some control over that.

Ex-Marcos aide charged in NY with art conspiracy
NEW YORK (AP) ? A former secretary to Imelda Marcos was charged Tuesday in New York with conspiracy to sell valuable artworks that disappeared during the collapse of Marcos' husband's regime in the Philippines.
Vilma Bautista, 74, was indicted on charges of conspiracy, tax fraud and offering a false instrument for filing. Two of her nephews, Chaiyot Jansen Navalaksana and Pongsak Navalaksana, also were charged.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said Bautista used false paperwork to sell a work from Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" series for $32 million in September 2010.
"The integrity of the international art market must be protected," Vance said in a statement. "This indictment sheds light on what happened to major works of art missing for more than 25 years."
Her attorney, Fran Hoffinger, said Bautista got caught in a civil dispute between the Marcoses and the Philippine government.
"It's a civil dispute," Hoffinger said. "It doesn't belong in criminal court."
According to the indictment, Bautista was a foreign service officer assigned to the Philippine Mission to the United Nations but unofficially served as Imelda Marcos' New York-based personal secretary.
The indictment says that during the presidency of her husband, Ferdinand, Imelda Marcos used state assets to acquire a vast collection of artwork and other valuables. Prosecutors say some of the art ended up in Bautista's possession after the Marcoses were ousted in a citizen revolt in 1986.
According to the indictment, the most valuable work was the 1899 Monet painting that was sold, "Japanese Footbridge Over the Water-Lily Pond at Giverny." There was also another Monet and Alfred Sisley's "Langland Bay" from 1887.
Prosecutors said Bautista and her nephews plotted to sell the paintings and keep the proceeds tax-free.
Bautista pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $175,000.

Pluto sibling missing its atmosphere
Distant starlight has given astronomers the best look yet at a distant icy sibling of Pluto, a dwarf planet called Makemake that appears to be missing its atmosphere, researchers say.
Although this icy world currently lacks an atmosphere, there is still a chance it could form one like a comet when it approaches the point in its orbit that is closest to the sun, scientists added.
In the past decade, astronomers have discovered a slew of "dwarf planets" that dwell with Pluto beyond the orbit of Neptune. Makemake was a world nicknamed "Easterbunny" by its discoverers before officially getting named after the Polynesian creator of humanity and the god of fertility.
The dwarf planet's red-tinged surface is apparently covered by a layer of frozen methane, and is bright enough to be seen by a high-end amateur telescope, despite its current distance of nearly 53 times the distance between the Earth and the sun. [Makemake's Missing Atmosphere (Video)]
Makemake: A plutoid revealed
Makemake is a type of icy dwarf planet known as a plutoid, as are Pluto and the newfound trans-Neptunian worlds Erisand Haumea.
Whereas Pluto has a tenuous atmosphere surrounding it, its near-twin Eris does not, most likely due to Eris' greater distance from the sun and colder surface temperature. Makemake orbits at an intermediate distance from the sun between Pluto and Eris, raising the question of whether it might possess an atmosphere.
In 2011, Makemake passed directly in front of the distant star NOMAD 1181-0235723. This eclipse or occultation helped backlight the icy world, and researchers now reveal data from seven telescopes of this eclipse has helped them pin down Makemake's size, shape and surface properties better than ever. "For me it is extremely remarkable that we can get an accurate knowledge of important properties of these mysterious dwarf planets even though they are so far away from the Earth," said lead study author Jose Ortiz, a planetary scientist at the Institute of Astrophysics of Andaluc?a in Granada, Spain. "Only three years ago we had never observed a single occultation by a trans-Neptunian object, and now we have managed to observe 12 such events, nine of them by our international team."
Such occultations are extremely difficult to predict and observe. For comparison, these worlds are so distant they appear about the same size "as that of a coin seen at a distance of 30 miles (50 kilometers) or smaller," Ortiz told Space.com. "But thanks to our hard work and to an important international collaboration, we were able to beat all the difficulties."
Makemake is about 890 miles (1,430 km) wide, making it about two-thirds the diameter of Pluto. Light from this distant star appeared and disappeared quickly as Makemake passed in front of it. This suggests there was no significant atmosphere around it to smear out the star's light.
At most, Makemake's atmosphere is 80 million to 250 million times thinner than Earth's at sea level, the researchers calculate. Still, there might be patches of atmosphere overlying warmer regions on its surface, such as dark patches that absorb more sunlight.
"We suspect that these dark patches might be concentrated near the latitude of the subsolar point of the planet ? the subsolar point is the point of the planet where the solar rays reach the surface perpendicularly, and therefore cause the maximum heating possible," Ortiz said. "These dark patches might form sort of a dark band in the planet."
Wispy atmosphere still possible
Other bodies with patchy atmospheres include Jupiter's moon Io and Saturn's moon Enceladus, which arise "mostly from gas released by volcanoes or the so-called cryovolcanoes, 'volcanoes' which instead of releasing magma release liquid water or a liquid mix," Ortiz said. "Even Mars has areas with a locally denser atmosphere, which in this case arises from sublimation of carbon dioxide ice."

Makemake might very well behave like a comet and grow an atmosphere during the parts of its year when it approaches the sun.
"We suspect that this is the case," Ortiz said. "But comets are usually so small and have so little mass that their gravity does not allow them to retain the atmospheres, which escape to space giving rise to the comets' tails. In the case of Makemake, its gravity is much higher and therefore the escape of the gases is not as dramatic as that of the comets."
Future research can focus on looking for other stellar occultations by large trans-Neptunian objects.
"We can now investigate trans-Neptunian objects with far more in depth than we could a few years ago, thanks to the stellar occultation technique," Ortiz said. "This will not only shed light on atmospheric phenomena, but also on important physics of these bodies. We would also like to explain and understand the similarities and differences in composition of the trans-Neptunian objects in general, which requires theoretical developments, models of different physical phenomena and plenty of work in many fields."
The scientists are to detail their findings Thursday in the journal Nature.

The key reasons behind the rating downgrade was a decline in PGNiG?s operating performance in the first nine months of 2012 relative to the same period of 2011, caused by a negative gas margin in its trade operations, and a rise in debt following the acquisition of PGNiG Termika.
The agency also pointed to the uncertainty concerning the future shape of the gas market in Poland and the potential impact of such a situation on the Company?s performance. Moody?s also mentioned changes in PGNiG?s business risk profile, resulting from higher spending on upstream operations ? an unregulated segment which may be additionally subject to planned taxation of oil and gas in Poland.
PGNiG?s Management Board deems a sound investment rating a priority, particularly in the context of the ongoing investment projects designed to enhance the national energy security, as it has a material effect on the feasibility and costs of such projects. In light of the foregoing, the Management Board expects that the right decisions regarding the price of gas and launch of production from new gas fields will bolster the Company?s financial ratios and provide rationale for an upgrade in credit ratings.
Aiming to improve the Company?s financial standing, the Management Board has taken steps to tighten its cost base. Volumes of cheaper gas imported from countries west and south of Poland have increased materially since last year (in H1 2012, the volumes rose by 700 million cubic metres year on year). In addition, a restructuring process was launched at the end of 2011; it covers selected parts of the PGNiG Group, including construction and assembly subsidiaries, the Company?s Head Office and, as of September 1st 2012, Gas Trading Divisions and Production Branches.

This?Strawberry Cheesecake Tea?is very interesting. I did try their Mango Cheesecake Tea but I prefer this one over the latter.
Strawberry Cheesecake Tea is basically a cheesecake in a tea. I know, eyebrows are raising now.hahhah

Want some magic? Try mixing your Strawberry Cheesecake Tea.?From its original red color, it will amazingly produce an orange-y shade. Not only that, from 2 layers, another layer will form right between the liquid cheesecake and the tea. Impressive, right?
