NFL: Detroit Lions & Matthew Stafford Agree to Long-Term Extension

With two weeks before NFL training camps open, now is the best time for teams to work out long-term extensions with their most coveted players, and ESPN?s Adam Schefter is reporting the Detroit Lions have inked franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford to a 3-year extension.?The added three years on the deal will be worth $53 million, according to ProFootballTalk.

Stafford?s current contract was set to expire after the 2014 season, but would now run through the 2016 season.

Stafford was the #1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia, and has become the franchise QB the Lions have been seeking for decades now. He?s already broken or is on pace to break nearly every significant Lions passing record, and Over the past two seasons, he?s thrown for more than 10,000 yards and 60 touchdowns.

In Week 17 of the 2011 NFL season, Stafford became the fourth quarterback in NFL history and third in the 2011 season, along with?Tom Brady?and?Drew Brees, to throw for?5000 passing yards?in a season. That same year, he helped lead the Lions to a?10-6 record and their first playoff appearance since 1999.

And for you fantasy football nuts,?Stafford finished 11th in?ESPN standard fantasy scoring last year with 263 points.

Stafford has thrived in the Lions? pass-happy offense, and according to ESPN Stats & Information, Stafford has a better passer rating (108.9) and almost as good of a Total Quarterback Rating (62.1) on plays that started with him under center since 2011 as he has from the shotgun.

He has thrown 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, with an overall completion percentage of 62.9, on 422 dropbacks from under center over that time.

In the shotgun, Stafford has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 42 touchdowns and 27 interceptions on 1,281 dropbacks.
